Goal 1 of Iroquois’ Strategic plan is community enhancement.  Our objectives are to create murals within our community, plant trees and flowers, make park benches, complete the volleyball and horseshoe pits in the park, plan seasonal decorating, complete the electronic sign, and continuous updates of the town’s website.  Committee members planning these projects are: Megan, Marlys, Mary, and Donna.

Iroquois and DeSmet Schools have been involved in negotiating a sports co-op for boys & girls basketball and girls volleyball.  Our school board has held several meetings, seeking the input of community.  They have also taken polls from parents of high school athletes, the athletes themselves, those attending parent/teacher conferences last week, and from the students in grades 8 through 11.  The final decision was not to co-op with DeSmet at this time.

The elementary children have been busy saving, gathering, and contributing coins in support of the new electronic sign that will soon be placed along Highway 14.  Our first milk jug is filled.  The preschool and first grade classes will take the change to the bank on Thursday.  I wonder what the total will be for this first jug?  Our second jug is almost full!  Which classes will be the next to go to the bank?  We’ll let you know!

What additional resources would make a difference in your community’s work to reduce poverty?

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Our Horizons group and Iroquois Area Community Club group have previously discussed proceeding with the process of becoming a 501C status group.  This status would allow us to apply and be eligible for more grants for our community projects.  Additional grants would help us to address each of the goals and objectives on our strategic plan.

Saturday, February 9, the Iroquois Horizons group held their celebration.  The group came together to discuss and distribute the community’s strategic plan.  The extreme cold hindered attendance, but the evening provided much opportunity to share ideas and visit.  Piano and vocal entertainment was provided by music director, Rod Ulrich and middle school student, Phyllis.  Cheryl Jacobs, SDSU Extension coordinator, attended our meeting.
