Summer Reading Roundup

Monday, March 10th, 2008

It’s hard to believe we are planning for summer reading already! As we enter the last nine weeks of school, the Iroquois Elementary Literacy Team has started the wheels rolling for this year’s summer reading program, Summer Reading Roundup. Research has proven a positive correlation between reading and writing over the summer and ability to learn throughout the school year. The staff of Iroquois Elementary feels strongly about giving our kids the opportunity to keep their brains thinking throughout the summer. If you have a student or know a young person, please help to encourage them throughout the summer!

What additional resources would make a difference in your community’s work to reduce poverty?

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Our Horizons group and Iroquois Area Community Club group have previously discussed proceeding with the process of becoming a 501C status group.  This status would allow us to apply and be eligible for more grants for our community projects.  Additional grants would help us to address each of the goals and objectives on our strategic plan.

Saturday, February 9, the Iroquois Horizons group held their celebration.  The group came together to discuss and distribute the community’s strategic plan.  The extreme cold hindered attendance, but the evening provided much opportunity to share ideas and visit.  Piano and vocal entertainment was provided by music director, Rod Ulrich and middle school student, Phyllis.  Cheryl Jacobs, SDSU Extension coordinator, attended our meeting.

In what ways is your community operating or working differently?

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

I think starting a new Sports Day committee is a good start on doing things differently. In the past this huge event was left up to the city council alone to do. Now several from different organizations in town are joining forces and planning the day. this is just the start to training ourselves to include other people in our planning.

What partnerships have been created, and what difference have they made for your community?

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

At our recent Horizons meeting, we decided to merge the Iroquois Area Community club and the Horizons group together as one. We are working hard on fulfilling what we set as goals in our strategic plan. Different committees have been formed to see that our different projects get completed. I think as a result of joining the two groups, we will be a much stronger group.

“Ranita the Frog Princess”

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

Thursday, February 28th, Iroquois Elementary 4th grade performed “Ranita the Frog Princes” by Carmen Agra Deedy. Preschool through fifth grade classes were present to view the performance as well as several 4th grade parents. The class made the well prop, golden arrow, and candle sticks using cardboard and paint. There were other items brought by students and the teacher. Parents helped gather costumes for several of the characters. Performing the play on the stage was very exciting, and the class is looking forward to another performance before the end of the school year.“Ranita the Frog Princess” tells the story of how the Frog Prince became the Frog Prince in the first place. The play also held lessons about treating everyone with respect and keeping promises. The 4th grade class is taught by Miss Lara Thomason.

An electronic sign will be installed this spring along highway 14.  Businesses, groups, and individuals will be able to use this sign to let others know what’s happening in our town.  The completion of this project will be possible only through the efforts of the entire community.  Fundraisers are being planned in March.  The elementary students are currently collecting coins toward this effort.  Any business, group, or individual wishing to contribute toward the sign may drop off their donation at the Farmers and Merchants State Bank.
